Paul Smith

Paul A. Smith, retired president and former owner of Central Texas Bus Lines, died Sunday at his residence. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Oakwood Cemetery with Dr. Jack Flanders officiating.

Mr. Smith was born June 27, 1911, in Lillian, Texas, to Arthur and Virginia Pollard Smith. He graduated from Cleburne High School in May 1929. he was employed with City National Bank form June 1, 1929, until Nov. 15, 1945. He married Evelyn Drake on Sept. 10, 1933, in Fort Worth. Mr. Smith was elected first president of Kiwanis Club in Cleburne and was on Board of Deacons at First Baptist Church of Cleburne before moving to Waco to become general manager of Central Texas Bus Lines on Jan. 1, 1946. On Sept. 1, 1960, Mr. Smith purchased the business from owner, G. W. Hyde and operated it until selling out on Feb. 1, 1973. While operating the bus line, he served on Board of Directors of National Bus Traffic Association in Chicago and was chairman of South Central Bus Traffic Association, which included Texas, Louisiana, Arkansans Oklahoma and New Mexico. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Waco.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of Waco; niece, Sally Sterago of Astoria, N.Y.; and nephew, John David Sterago of Orem, Utah.
